Linear Positioning for Lab Automation

X-Y positioning is necessary in a variety of lab automation equipment including analyzers, pipetting machines, array analyzers, etc. Often the method used for positioning feedback for the servo motors is problematic. Typical encoders have backlash and glass scales are difficult to maintain and are easily damaged.

Balluff's BML Magnetic Linear Encoder offers a superior solution for highly accurate and reliable linear position feedback, without the problems of standard encoders and glass scales. The BML's non-contact technology allows the linear motion to be monitored directly, eliminating the need for rotary encoders and associated mechanical couplings, which can introduce position inaccuracies. The BML magnetic encoder consists of a flexible, adhesive-backed, magnetically-encoded tape which can be easily and quickly installed. The sensor head is compact and fully-encapsulated with positional accuracies to 20µm and speeds up to 20 m/s. No retrofitting is necessary since its direct quadrature output easily interfaces with existing electronic servo systems.
