Long Range Lasers w/ Optical Protection
Laser Distance Sensors for use in tough environments.
Balluff’s upgraded BOD 63M visible red laser distance sensor employs high-speed “time of flight” technology to sense minute variations in targets down to 1 mm at ranges out to 6 m (19.7 ft). It has been completely revamped to allow a shorter dead zone of 200 mm and has a second discrete output. This makes it useful in applications such as roll diameter detection where the setpoints can be used to create an ON-OFF window.

The BOD 66M laser distance sensor has been engineered to deliver ±0.5% linearity over its operational range, and can detect multiple target materials with minimal shift in detected position due to differences in target color or surface reflectivity. Available with 0-10V or 4-20mA analog outputs, and a teachable setpoint output for easy interface to discrete I/O.

Steel Furnace Straightening and Centering

Customers who have a heat soak furnace, tunnel furnace, or a re-heat furnace have a need to accurately position parts as they enter or leave the furnace. A shift too far to one side or a part that is too high can damage the furnace, thus causing up to 12 hours of downtime. The BOD 63M is ideal for this positioning application, but the emitted infrared waves from the heat cause inaccurate readings from the sensor. Balluff’s new BOD 63-SH-3 filter prevents this. The bracket and lens accessory is designed to tune out light waves that may interfere with the receiver of the BOD 63M which increases accuracy by 90% versus models where the filter is not installed.

Weld Cell Lens Protection

In another common application, long range distance sensors are used for locating parts in weld cells. If a part is not located properly, the weld may not hold or tooling may be damaged causing much downtime. Naturally, weld spatter cannot be contained easily, and without protection, the sensor could fall victim to damage as the picture shows. The BOD 66-SH-4 shield (standard w/ PTFE-coated lens) and the BOD 66-SH-5 (slotted w/ PTFE-coated lens) are easy to install or replace and are effective partners in protecting the life of the sensors.
