Plastic Injection Molding
Replace a linear potentiometer used in a plastic injection molding machine with a BIW, non-contact pulsed-inductive transducer.

Summary
Plastic inection molding machines often use linear potentiometers for clamping and ejection position control, as well as for screw stroke feedback. Because linear potentiometers rely on mechanical contact between a resistive element and a wiper contact, they tend to degrade over time and fail prematurely. As a drop-in replacement for linear pots, the BIW pulsed-inductive transducer can reduce machine downtime caused by signal degradation and outright failures of linear potentiometers.

Objectives
Find a more robust, cost effective alternative to linear potentiometers with little to no retrofitting needed.

Just about the same time as a process is running at peak performance, linear pots tend to start wearing out. As potentiometers wear, they produce inaccurate readings, negatively affecting the quality of the process they are measuring. Often adjustments are made to the process to compensate for variability in the feedback, which causes a problem when the linear pot is replaced. By the time it is replaced, the original settings are far from what the current settings are. Usually the original settings are unknown, and therefore requires the need to tweak the process several times, which causes much downtime and frustration.

The BIW pulsed-inductive transducer is a wear-free, cost-effective alternative to linear potentiometers, which eliminates premature failure and performance degradation. It produces constant and consistent positional readings over an extended period of time. Process quality - and product quality - remains constant, protected from changes due to contact wear. Having a similar form factor and output signal as a linear pot, replacing one with a BIW is simple.
