Monitoring on spindles and chucks can be used to ensure proper clamping or even measurement of the fixed component. Rotary and swivel tables with continuous turning can cause trouble for cables and connectivity. Solutions to connect the automation to the controller across the axis of rotation are innovating automation across the industry.
Tools are typically clamped via conical geometries. With three BES inductive sensors, three states can be queried free of contact and thus free of wear: Unclamped, clamped without tool and clamped with tool.
This form of clamping distance monitoring is especially suitable for larger strokes because the sensors are installed at a defined distance from each other.
If a conical outer geometry is present on the tool holder, movements transverse to the sensor axis can also be detected via a BAW inductive distance sensor.
Such an arrangement is considered the classic solution for continuously measured clamping distance monitoring.
By linear position measurement, a clamping distance monitoring can be realized even with rotation of the clamping mechanics.
