Reliable object and level detection
Balluff's capacitive sensors are not only superior in object and level detection applications, but they are also highly specialized for a wide range of challenging applications. The capacitive sensors consists of high temperature and pressure ratings, stainless steel and PTFE housings for harsh environments, a wide supply voltage range and especially compact form factors.
Balluff capacitive sensors are ideal for presence detection of nonmetallic objects and levels of granulates, powders, viscous media or liquids, whether conductive water-based or non-conductive fluids such as oil.
The industry standard capacitive sensors are M12 to M30 tubular housings. However, small parts detection or installations in tight mounting spaces require smaller form factors, therefore Balluff developed a capacitive product line that offers a large selection of sizes and form factors including miniature remote amplified versions.
Capacitive object detection sensors from Balluff employ a straight-line electrical field which is optimized for detection of solid bodies (e.g. wafers, PCBs, cartons, paper stacks, bottles, plastic blocks and plates) and liquid level detection through non-metallic container walls made of glass and plastic (thickness max. 4 mm).
Capacitive sensors for level detection use a spherical field to detect the product, bulk material or liquid (e.g. plastic granulate, sugar, oil, aqueous media) directly or through a container wall.
Balluff's patented hybrid capacitive technology sensor series detects water-based conductive media through thick glass and plastic walls while compensating for moisture, foam and material build-up.

Flush mount sensors detect objects reliably regardless of color, material, and surface texture. Non-flush sensors are perfect for level detection of granules, liquids, and powders.
Capacitive mini-sensors are the right choice for part detection in demanding environments where dust, reflections or the material properties and color of an object can influence other sensor technologies. They can monitor stack heights and detect solids and liquids with extreme precision. Granules or liquids can be detected through glass or plastic container walls up to 4 mm thick or in direct contact with the media.
Balluff's miniature capacitive sensors are available in a very compact height of 2.5 mm with a diameter of 10 mm enabling them to be easily mounted into space limited applications. Most sensors utilize stainless steel housings with Teflon sensing faces enabling them to withstand demanding applications. Remote mounted amplifiers with multiple control options and the ability to remote teach makes integration quick and easy.

Standard level sensors can detect levels through container walls up to 4mm thick.
Balluff's patented hybrid capacitive technology sensor series detects conductive water-based conductive media through thick glass and plastic walls while compensating for moisture, foam and material build-up. Hybrid technology sensors can detect levels through container walls up to 10mm thick. After initial set up the sensor will ignore foaming and filming without re-adjustment.
Balluff capacitive sensors detect objects by evaluating the change in capacitance which an object creates when it enters the electrical field of a capacitor. Thus capacitive sensors can detect not only metals, but also non-conductors and simply “see” through non-metallic materials.
Objects will be detected depending on the material specific dielectric constant, its relative size compared to the sensing field and the distance in between. Capacitive object detection sensors utilize a straight-line electrical field which is optimized for detection of solid bodies such as wafers, PCBs, cartons, paper stacks, bottles, plastic blocks and plates.
Balluff's flexible capacitive sensors is easily and economically mounted using double-sided tape or with fasteners. The sensors are easily affixed to container walls or tubes and conform to the shape of the container or tube. Adjustment and evaluation are conveniently done via a remote amplifier.
When used for level detection the remote amplifier can provide either a discrete output or a continuous analog output. Depending on the amplifier selected the output can either be a voltage or current output or can be networked using IO-Link.
Balluff's exclusive 18mm capacitive sensor with current analog output can provide measurements of objects regardless of color or surface texture. The sensors are suitable for material selection, measuring coating thickness, product thickness monitoring, height measurement or for determining diameters.
Balluff's remote capacitive sensors with amplifiers now have the ability to provide either a voltage or current analog output. This functionality now allows for level detection with a capacitive sensor for non-metallic containers. In addition these amplifiers can communicate via IO-Link.
Typically, standard capacitive sensors are offered in M12 to M30 tubular housings, yet smaller form factors are necessary when trying to precisely detect small parts or in space-restricted applications. To address these needs, Balluff offers a wide variety of sensor types, including an exclusive line of small capacitive sensors that can be calibrated remotely using a separate amplifier.
