Balluff's fiber optic sensors are used when a conventional optical sensor is too large or too inflexible for the application: For example, for small part detection, checking part features, part positioning, counting tasks and in robotics. A complete sensor consists of a base unit and a plastic or fiber tube to guide the light, depending on what the application requires.
Plastic light guides are used for applications with low requirements for robustness and temperature or chemical resistance. Glass fiber optic tubes are suitable for harsh environments - operating in the presence of oil mist and chemicals and at temperatures up to or over 200 °C.
Both plastic and glass fiber optic cables are characterized by their transmission accuracy and speed. Various heads (diameter from 2 to 8 mm, square from 5 x 4 mm to 23 x 55 mm, ...) with straight, angled, and even bendable optical heads for plastic fiber optics round off the Balluff portfolio.
