Balluff's magnetic encoder systems feature proprietary magnetizing technology that assures precise pole-to-pole spacing, high flux density, and extremely uniform magnetic field strength. High-quality magnetic targets are key to delivering high encoder accuracy. Benefits include wider operating gaps, lower hysteresis, higher repeat accuracy, and reduced linearity deviation.

Form factors include linear tape, radial ring, and off-axis ring or disk, with pole spacings of 1, 2, and 5 mm. Magnetic tracks can be coded for either incremental or absolute information.

Balluff magnetic track readers are available with a variety of output signals including standard quadrature incremental, SSI absolute, BiSS-C absolute, and analog Sin/Cos.

Balluff also offers application-specific engineering capabilities for both magnetic targets and track readers.

    The solution

    Balluff's Nonius 2-track absolute encoder disc technology is gaining a reputation in the motor encoder world as best-in-class. When combined with a high-quality sensing chip, the high-quality rotary disk delivers unparalleled accuracy for motor shaft position feedback. Balluff absolute rotary disk systems find application anywhere that motor shaft position must be known in real time, for example steer-by-wire electric steering systems. Another application for this technology is in torque motors that are used to index a rotating mechanism to a precise angular location, within < ±0.2° absolute error per rotation.

    Compared to alternatives like glass, Mylar, or metal encoder wheels, the advantages of magnetic targets for motor feedback include immunity from contamination by dirt, dusts, and liquids and much higher tolerance of shock and vibration.

    Absolute rotary encoder enables precise electric valve control

    The solution

    Balluff's Nonius 2-track absolute encoder disc technology, when combined with a high-quality sensing chip, delivers unparalleled accuracy for rotary valve position feedback. The system allows indexing of the rotating mechanism to a precise angular location, within < ±0.2° absolute error per rotation.

    Unlike resistive potentiometer solutions, magnetic encoders are non-contact and wear-free for long service life. Other advantages of magnetic encoders for valve position feedback include immunity from contamination by dirt, dusts, and liquids, and higher tolerance of shock and vibration.
