The BTL magnetostrictive linear position sensors from Balluff in a profile design are non-contacting and absolute measuring systems for precisely detecting one or more positions. They deliver outstanding performance in harsh environments, such as in presses, injection molding machines, or gantry robots, since they are made of an hermetically sealed IP67 aluminum housing. The magnets of the position encoder act on the measurement element through the wall of the aluminum profile.
The linear position sensors have flexible installation options. You can get the required position encoder in a floating or captive variant. As floating position encoders, they are attached directly to the moving machine component to be measured and move along with it at a certain distance above and along the profile. The advantage with this: The guiding precision is not subject to stringent requirements. The measurement systems tolerate a horizontal and vertical offset of just a few millimeters.
The most important application for our BTL magnetostrictive linear position sensors in rod design is in hydraulic drive units. They are exceptionally well-suited for use in hydraulic cylinders for position feedback, for molding and rolling mills, or for elevator and hoisting technology.
Since the sensors are installed in the pressure area of hydraulic cylinders, they have to have the same pressure resistance as the cylinder itself. The measurement element is installed in a pressure-rated tube made of non-magnetic stainless steel. The flange seals the high pressure area using an O-ring. Moreover, the electronics are integrated in a protective housing outside of the cylinder on the flange of the rod.

Depending on the application, you receive from us variants for areas that are threatened by gas or by dust. Magnetostrictive linear position sensors that withstand possible explosion hazards are also available for Zone 2.
The housing for the BTL-J-DEXC-TA12 model series is robust and pressure-encapsulated. Its electronics module can be exchanged quickly and easily. This means that these variants meet the requirements set by the oil and gas industries for high reliability and easy service within the Ex zones.
