In areas with a risk of explosion, many tasks can only be solved by reliable position detection. For example, the monitoring of hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders, the checking of hydraulically or pneumatically controlled valves and fill level detection.

Balluff provides you with contactless measuring micropulse transducers and sensors in a wide variety of designs for use in the various Ex zones. They are supplied complete with basic certifications such as ATEX (EU), IECEx (international), NEC (US) or CEC (Canada), as well as additional regional certifications. This means that you can securely sell and install your standardized systems around the world.

  • Position feedback with position measurement systems

    Reliable position feedback for all Ex zones

    Many applications in potentially explosive areas require the use of position measurement systems for reliable position feedback. For example, isolation and control valves used in oil and gas extraction, in refineries and in petrochemical plants.

    For the Ex zones 0 and 1, Balluff offers magnetostrictive linear position sensors in various rod designs. Our pressure-encapsulated designs have varying performance profiles, for example, for areas where there is a risk relating to gas or dust. There are also variants available to you for use in Ex zone 2, which can withstand the potentially explosive conditions there.

    The housings of our magnetostrictive linear position sensors are robust and pressure-encapsulated. The electronics module can be changed quickly and easily. This means that all variants meet the requirements set by the oil and gas industries for high reliability and simple service.

    Reliable control and monitoring with inductive NAMUR sensors

    Balluff offers a wide range of inductive NAMUR sensors that are pressure-resistant to 500 bar – they can be used for running end position checks on hydraulic cylinders and monitoring valve positions in potentially explosive areas. All the sensors are media-resistant and available in a wide range of housing and thread sizes.

    Some of these sensors are suitable for areas in which an explosive atmosphere only occurs rarely. Combined with a isolating amplifier, these sensors can, however, also be used in potentially explosive systems and spaces in Zone 1 (2G).

    Protection against explosive dust, gases and vapors

    We specifically developed our BMF 255 magnetic cylinder sensors for areas in which dust, gases and vapors are present on a continuous, long-term and frequent basis – the Ex zone 0/20.

    Balluff sensors are easy to install. They are inserted into T-grooves from above or mounted on round cylinders and tie rod cylinders with suitable brackets.

    Via a cable that you can assemble yourself, you can connect each sensor quickly and comfortably to the matching isolating amplifier outside of the Ex zone. The amplifier with relay output acts as an interface between electrical signals from the potentially explosive area and the safe zone. You can also get the isolating amplifier from Balluff – reliable quality from a single source.
