Reach your quality and productivity goals

More cars on the roads mean an increasing demand for tires. The variety of tires is increasing, too. To remain competitive, manufacturers must be able to produce differing lot sizes with minimal changeover times, while still meeting quality and productivity requirements. Balluff offers you proven technologies to support flexibility and visibility in your automated tire production.

Tire building machine: Keep production moving

Tire building involves joining the material layers on the building drum into a tire blank. You can increase productivity by using sensors to reduce interruptions: use inclination sensors to control the tilt movements on conveyor belts, optical sensors to control the sag of material layers, and linear measurement systems to ensure slides are positioned precisely.

Application examples — tire building machine

  • Ensure continuous material supply using inclination sensors

Tire building machines require a continuous supply of material layers. Our inclination sensors perform this function by controlling the tilt movements of the conveyor belts. This enables continuous tracking. Thanks to their rugged and compact metal housing, the inclination sensors are ideally suited for use under harsh conditions. Their centering function enables flexible installation.

    Ensure continuous material supply

  • Control slack with photoelectric sensors

To make the supply of material layers continuous, there is usually some slack between the conveyor belts of the tire building machine. This compensates for the time offset between continuous feed and stepped processing stages. Photoelectric distance sensors continuously monitor this slack. They ensure that the slack isn’t less than a predetermined minimum or long enough to touch the floor, which would create a delay in the tire building process. The tire’s black material layers are highly light-absorbing, but this does not present a challenge for our optical sensors. They are also simple and intuitive to operate with their display and setting buttons.

    Enable reliable slack control

  • Guarantee precise positioning using magnetic encoders

Our magnetic encoders provide correct positioning of the slides used in tire building. Thanks to their compact design, you can easily integrate this measurement system into very tight spaces. They are non-contacting and therefore wear-free, which gives them a long service life and requires no downtime for maintenance.

Heat presses: Ensure the highest quality

The green tire arrives at the heat press for vulcanizing, where it is given its final shape and profile. Pressures up to 22 bar and temperatures from 165 to 200 degrees Celsius are typical. Our high-precision and durable position measuring systems from Balluff guarantee the highest tire quality even under these conditions. And for reliable identification and tracking over the entire production cycle you can choose between manual code readers and automated RFID systems.

Application examples, heat presses

  • Close heating presses safely with data from linear position sensors

When green tires are vulcanized, the closing movement of the heating press needs to be monitored. Our magnetostrictive linear position sensors confirm the press is tightly closed so the green tire can be vulcanized as the process demands. Their non-contact measurement technology ensures high repeat accuracy and helps you achieve consistent tire quality, even under in processes involving high temperatures and strong vibration.

  • Read barcodes manually

You can identify tires marked with barcodes by using our handheld code reader. These industrial-grade devices read all common 1D, 2D and stacked barcodes and are simple and intuitive to use thanks to their laser marking frames and audible read confirmation. You can choose between RS232 and wireless Bluetooth versions.

    Reliable and flexible barcode reading

  • Modernize communication standards with IO-Link converters

With our IO-Link converters you can easily integrate RS232 devices like handheld code readers into an existing controller architecture without expensive RS232 cards. This ensures uniform and consistent communication between devices and bi-directional data transfer with the controller. IO-Link also allows you to reliably monitor and easily configure all the devices from a central location.

    Using modern communication standards consistently

  • Automate identification and traceability with RFID

RFID offers an automated and reliable alternative to the manual scanning process. UHF tags can be vulcanized into the tires during the heating process. This adds a unique identification number which can be linked to tire-specific data for exact identification and traceability. This enables monitoring of the tire beyond the manufacturing process to over its entire service life. Automate identification, and simplify inventory control.
