BRS radar sensor M30 for object detection and distance measurement

The problem solver that convinces where other technologies reach their limits

Radar sensors impress with their precision, speed and reliability, even under difficult environmental conditions. They deliver stable measurement results regardless of light, dirt, moisture or temperature fluctuations and are ideal for demanding industrial applications. With a long range, precise resolution and fast response times, they master tasks that other technologies often cannot.

The Balluff BRS radar sensor in the M30 housing is the new spearhead of sensors with 122 GHz technology. It is the world's first radar sensor to combine the advantages of radar technology for near-field object detection and precise distance measurement. This makes it the ideal solution for applications where precision, speed and robustness are required.

Thanks to its M30 housing with IP69K protection class and the IO-Link and analog interfaces, the M30 radar sensor is ideally equipped for industrial use.

The advantages of radar sensors at a glance

  • Long range and precise resolution
  • Very high measuring frequency and fast response times
  • Robust against dust, dirt, moisture, direct light, fog, steam and draughts
  • Insensitive to magnetic or electric fields
  • Reliable with transparent, shiny or hot objects
  • Trouble-free parallel operation of several sensors
  • Independent of ambient light and debris
  • Signal quality display for maximum process reliability

The special features of the BRS M30 radar sensor

  • High accuracy and resolution as well as high selectivity between objects - reliable detection of even the smallest parts
  • Measuring frequency up to 1 kHz - more than 100,000 objects per hour can be detected
  • Blind zone of only 300 mm (depending on target object and ambient conditions)
  • Narrow detection beam of only 10° (elevation and azimuth) - optimum focusing on the target object
  • Robust M30 housing with IP69K - resistant even in harsh environments
  • Radar sensor with IO-Link and analogue interface - for maximum flexibility in parameterization and output

Exemplary applications from practice

1. Detecting bottles at top speed

The challenge:

A customer is looking for a sensor that is fast enough to detect more than 100,000 bottles per hour. He is currently measuring with ultrasonic sensors, which are clearly too slow. In addition, alternative light barrier sensors quickly become blind due to the cleaning agents used.

The solution:

With a radar sensor in an M30 housing and 122 GHz, the bottles can be precisely detected via an analog output or digital switching output (SIO), even at high speeds. Parameterization is carried out via the industry standard IO-Link.

The advantages:

  • High speedThe sensor offers the required high speed and thus significantly increases the efficiency of the production line.

  • RobustnessThe sensor works reliably in harsh conditions such as dust and moisture, which minimizes downtime.

2. Tire detection

The challenge:

Optical light barriers have difficulty reliably detecting tires due to their matte black surface and printed or glued-on labels. In addition, the light arrays and reflectors are susceptible to damage from the tires, and the functionality of the photoelectric sensors suffers when dirt and contaminants build up on the surface.

The solution:

Radar sensors in the compact M30 housing offer a reliable solution for detecting tires on conveyor belts, even under difficult conditions.

The advantages:

  • Reliable performance:Works even under difficult conditions, increasing operational safety.

  • Non-contact detection:Optimizes the production process by reliably detecting tires.

  • High range flexibilityFlexible in range, suitable from small to large ranges.

  • Easy integrationQuick connection to existing systems thanks to IO-Link and SIO mode.
