Using the GSDML Composer In the Balluff Engineering Tool
1. GSDML Composer
Balluff Engineering Tool Version 1.66 and higher have a feature to allow custom GSDML creation for Balluff Profinet IO-Link masters. This feature allows for generating custom modules in the Profinet IO-Link master with exact IO-Link devices that are connected to the Profinet IO-Link master. Having the IO-Link device in the GSDML file makes it easier to setup the parameters on the IO-Link device when using the Profinet IO-Link master module.
In the Balluff Engineering Tool on the right-hand side of the main screen, there is a selection for GSDML composer.

This will open a new window for the GSDML composer. In the new window, the first step is to select 'Add Module' to add in the Balluff IO-Link master module. The search table can be used to find the Balluff IO-Link master module.

Next, select the 'Extended device catalog' tab. In there, select 'Add list' to create a new custom device list name.

First Assign a new name, then Add IO-Link devices that will be used with the Profinet IO-Link master module. The search bar can be used to find the IO-Link devices. All Balluff IO-Link devices will be in the database.

For other vendor IO-Link devices, the IODD file will need to be imported first. To import an IODD file, go back to the main screen and select 'Edit Topology'. Then Import the device IODD from the 'Device Catalog' tab.

Go through and add all IO-Link devices into the extended device catalog. For each IO-Link device, select the box of the parameter that should be included in the GSDML file.

Any writable parameters can be edited to its default values. Please note that depending on the device, there is a byte limit from each GSDML file that must not be exceeded.

Once finalized, the custom device catalog will be linked to the IO-Link master with those parameters setup as the default values. The name and the device catalog can be edited by selecting the pencil icon.

The extended device catalog is then linked to the Product ID of the Profinet IO-Link master module. The GSDML file can then be downloaded by selecting the download icon. This GSDML file can then be installed in the Profinet Master software, such as Step 7 or TIA Portal.
