Pin 2 configuration for UA on sensor hub with Profinet from GSDML 2.4x for Siemens TIA

1. Introduction

In order to operate our IO-Link sensor-actuator hubs without an external power supply with outputs on our IO-Link masters, it may be necessary to provide an actuator supply via pin 2.

These instructions are intended to explain the configuration for our IO-Link masters with Profinet from GSDML 2.4x.
For older GSDML versions 2.3x and older, please use the corresponding document.

2. Recognize diagnostic messages

IO-Link sensor hub is connected to port and SF error is present on the IO-Link master

The diagnostics for the IO-Link port are available via channel diagnostics

In the web server, the event is displayed in the menu of the respective device:

There are two different ways to directly recognize the missing power supply on the device:

1. LED UA does not light up green:

2. LED UA lights up red:

3. Konfiguration in TIA

Configuration in the TIA Portal using the GSDML

3.1. Actuator voltage pin 2 Configure

IO-Link I/O ports" module with and without process data

In this module, the states of pin 2 of the respective ports are mapped via the "BALLUFF 8 Port IO-Link Master" submodule as standard. Example Port 00/ Pin 2 -> E x.0, output Port 07 / Pin 2 A x.7

There is a selection with or without process data for this module

3.1.1. Pin 2 Addressing in the head module

When using the head module with process data for pin 2, only the configuration of the respective port is necessary. Pin 2 can then be switched directly via the process data of the head module.

The behavior of pin 2 can now be set in the module settings of the respective ports. Here it is necessary to set the pin 2 behavior to DO.
In this example, the output can then be switched on accordingly for pin 2 via the address "Q3.0".

3.1.2. Pin 2 addressing with separate output byte

When using the head module without process data, the configuration of the respective port is necessary; in addition, an extended module -> outputs pin 2 must be plugged in.

The behavior of pin 2 can now be set in the module settings of the respective ports. Here it is necessary to set the pin 2 behavior to DO.

The "Extended modules" module is required.

The module outputs pin 2 can now be plugged into any slot here. In this process data, the respective pin 2 of the ports can now be activated via output byte 3. In this example, Pin2 of port 0 -> "Q3.0"

Pin2 can then be switched directly via the process data of the head module.

3.2. Switch actuator voltage pin 2

The corresponding ports can now be switched on via the "Outputs Pin2" byte or according to the output address in the "BALLUFF 8 Port IO-Link Master" head module.

To do this, either activate the corresponding output byte as required in the running program or activate it as a test via the watch table.

Pin 2 should be switched immediately (orange LED on IO-Link master port / pin 2) and the diagnostic message should disappear.

3.3. Switch pin 2 permanently (from BNI XG5)

The new multiprotocol IO-Link masters (XG5) also offer the option of switching pin 2 to active via the process data.

These are then permanently active as long as the IO-Link master is supplied with the actuator voltage (UA).
It is therefore no longer necessary to switch pin 2 to active.

4. Configuration successful

In this example, port 0 / pin 2 should now be active, the SF LED should be off and the port 0 LED for pin 2 should light up

5. FAQ - Error persists

Have you switched "Pin 2" and the diagnosis remains active?

  • Is the actuator voltage present at the master?
  • Was a 4-wire cable used between the master and device?
  • Can a cable break be ruled out?
