Electrical wiring of sensors

What you need to know about wiring of sensors

Which output type do you need: PNP or NPN?What is the difference between normally open and normally closed? We will explain it for you.

PNP output (Sourcing output +24 V DC)

PNP output (Sourcing output +24 V DC): The load is connected to the switching output and the common ground (-). This type of output is common in Europe and North America.

PNP output

NPN output (Sinking output 0 V DC)

NPN output (Sinking output 0 V DC): The load is connected to the switching output and the reference point (+). This type of output is common in Asia.

NPN output

Normally open (NO)

NO = normally open
The sensor turns "on" when an object is detected. This principle is the most commonly used in automation technology.

NO

Normally closed (NC)

NC = normally closed
The sensor turns "off" when an object is detected.

NC

Complementary (NO + NC)

NO + NC = Complementary
The sensor provides both signals. Both outputs are switched when an object is detected.
