Does the Color Really Matter?

If you’ve ever browsed a catalog of photoelectric sensors, you’re probably noticed that some use red light while others use blue light. At first glance, it might seem like a minor difference or even just a design choice. But the color of the light can have a noticeable impact on how well a sensor performs in your application. The good news is that neither one is universally better than the other. It simply comes down to what you’re trying to detect. 

Why Does Light Color Make a Difference?

Every object reflects and absorbs light differently. A shiny metal part behaves differently than a cardboard box. A clear plastic bottle reflects light differently than a black rubber component. Since blue and red light have different wavelengths, they interact with these materials in different ways. 

That’s why changing nothing more than the color of the sensor’s light can sometimes solve a detection problem that has been causing headaches for weeks.

Why Is Red Light is So Common?

There’s a reason why most photoelectric sensors use red light – It’s the most versatile. For everyday applications like detecting boxes, metal parts, plastic components or for products moving down a conveyor belt, a red light sensor is usually all you need.

It’s reliable, easy to align because you can clearly see the beam, and it’s often the most economical option. If your application isn’t particularly challenging, there’s no reason to overcomplicate things. A red light sensor will likely do the job well.

When Does Blue Light Have the Advantage?

Blue light starts to shine when the application gets more difficult. Clear plastics, glossy packaging, reflective metals, and dark colored products can all create challenges for traditional photoelectric sensors. These materials don’t always reflect red light in a predictable way, which can lead to inconsistent detection. Because blue light has a shorter wavelength, it interacts differently with many of these surfaces. 

In the right application, using a blue light can result in a cleaner, more stable sensing signal and few false detections. This does not mean blue light is stronger or more accurate. It simply means, it’s better suited for certain types of materials.

Application Driven

When working with standard materials and you need a dependable, all around solution, a red light photoelectric sensor is often the best place to start. It’s proven, comes in all different sizes and form factors and handles a majority of industrial applications with ease. 

But, when transparent, reflective, glossy or very dark objects enter the picture, blue light sensors deserve a closer look. They can often solve detection challenges that seem difficult at first, simply because their light interacts differently with the target. 

In the end, choosing between blue and red light isn’t about picking the ‘better’ technology. It’s about matching the sensor to the application. Taking a few minutes to consider the material you’re detecting can make the difference between a sensor that works most of the time and the one that works every time.
