Für die Grenzstandsmessung gibt es verschiedene Möglichkeiten, je nach Art und Material des Behälters. Bei transparenten Behältern kann der Füllstand von außen erkannt werden. Das funktioniert berührungslos auch bei opaken nichtmetallischen Behältern oder medienberührend innerhalb eines Tanks. Dabei werden entweder kapazitive oder optoelektronische Sensoren eingesetzt.
