Get a Better Connection with the Right Torque

Why correct torque matters and how to tighten industrial connectors consistently

Reliable industrial connectivity starts with proper installation. If a connector is too loose, it may not seal correctly. If it is overtightened, the connector or mating interface may be damaged.

A connector torque wrench removes the guesswork by applying a specified amount of torque.

Why use a torque wrench?

“Hand-tight” can vary by installer and application. Using the correct torque wrench helps:

  • Produce consistent, repeatable connections

  • Support proper sealing

  • Prevent loose connections

  • Reduce the risk of overtightening

  • Standardize installation and maintenance

A connector torque wrench supports repeatable tightening during installation. How does a connector torque wrench work?

A connector torque wrench applies a defined amount of tightening torque to the connector’s coupling nut. The correct tool depends on three criteria:

  • Required torque

  • Connector type

  • Wrench opening

Always check the connector documentation before selecting the tool. Similar-looking connectors may require different torque values because their materials and design can differ.

The wrench marking helps identify the required wrench opening.

How do you use a connector torque wrench?

Use the following sequence to tighten the connector consistently:

  1. Identify the connector type.

  2. Verify the specified torque in the connector documentation.

  3. Select the correct wrench.

  4. Inspect and align the connection.

  5. Thread the coupling nut by hand.

  6. Apply steady pressure with the torque wrench.

  7. Stop when the wrench indicates that the specified torque has been reached.

Important: Do not continue tightening after the specified torque has been reached.

Find the right tool

Balluff offers torque wrenches for common industrial connector formats, including M8, M12, and 7/8-inch connections. Each wrench is designed around a specific torque value and wrench opening.

Use the Balluff torque-wrench selection guide to identify the right option for your connector or cable.
