Five IO-Link Wireless Applications for Unlocking Efficiency in Automation

IO-Link Wireless is transforming industrial connectivity by reducing wiring, weight, and costs while maintaining the same capabilities as wired IO-Link. Let’s consider real-world application examples – from flexible manufacturing to automation-guided vehicles (AGVs) and robotic tooling – where IO-Link Wireless enhances efficiency, adaptability, and overall performance, saving time and resources.

Flexible manufacturing

Exchangeable fixtures with IO-Link are now essential in manufacturing. Exchanging fixtures always requires connecting and disconnecting some type of multi-conductor cabling. IO-Link Wireless eliminates this need, allowing for the easy addition, movement, or removal of sensors and actuators without the constraint of cabling. Using IO-Link Wireless results in faster fixture swap-outs and greater adjustability.

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs)

AGVs rely on accurate and timely sensor data for navigation and environmental interaction. In many cases, AGV applications require a PLC/Controller on the AGV to control the on-board I/O. IO-Link Wireless allows the local PLC at the station to control the AGV’s sensors and actuators, reducing the need for onboard controllers and lowering AVG costs.

Robotic end-of-arm tooling

A typical end-of-arm tool can be a mess of wiring and cables running down the robot’s arm. IO-Link Wireless significantly reduces the number of cables, cutting down the total mass on each robot axis. Additionally, using certain IO-Link hubs allows tool ID to be achieved wirelessly.

Mobile robotic platforms

Again, using IO-Link Wireless on end-of-arm tooling offers clear advantages. Now, imagine a robot on a mobile platform – IO-Link Wireless eliminates the worry not only about cabling along the robot’s arm but also within the flexible cable tray as the robot moves along different axes.

Remote monitoring and maintenance

Wiring pressure, level, vibration, flow, and other condition monitoring sensors back to a typical IO-Link Master can be challenging. IO-Link Wireless simplifies this by eliminating the need for cables, allowing you to place sensors in remote locations without the constraints of traditional wiring.

Rotary tables

Rotary tables have traditionally been trouble with slip rings. IO-Link Wireless can remove the need for slip rings by allowing sensors and actuators to communicate wirelessly with the controller. If 24 volts are required, inductive couplers can transmit power through a small air gap.
